I must confess — YouTube is one of my blind spots of the Internet. You would think an avid pop culture follower would be more attuned to the creator economy, but YouTube has always been one of those sites that has managed to elude my studies.

If you glance at my YouTube landing page, it’s an embarrassing array of ASMR videos mixed with Boiler Room DJ sets. So when I perused the YouTube trends of 2023, I found myself woefully out of touch. I didn’t recognize more than half of the names, and had never felt “older” than when I glanced at the most followed accounts list.
